Demarco notes that preparing meals for yourself on a daily basis can be quite challenging, but taking the time to meal prep for several days in advance can make a significant difference.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — The beginning of a new year presents an excellent opportunity to acquire a new skill. While it may prove to be difficult at times, dedicating yourself to the task could lead to unexpected and rewarding results.

As we step into the new year, many of us are considering picking up a new skill to enhance our self-esteem and personal growth.

Reporter: “Does cooking really require as much skill as it appears?”
Demarco: "At times, individuals can feel somewhat daunted."

Our curiosity led us to the kitchen, where Chef Kevin Demarco from Demarco Family Kitchen introduced us to a new skill: the art of cooking.

Reporter: "What dish are we preparing today?"
Demarco: “I’ve created a special recipe for you all today. It’s a delightful homemade Saffron Fettuccini.”

Alright, let’s start whipping up some delicious dishes!

"We'll be serving caramelized eggplant, shallots, and fava beans."
Reporter: "Does today's dish have a stronger Mediterranean influence?"
Demarco replied, "Absolutely."

Journalist: "What is it about cooking that you enjoy?"
Demarco: “Cooking is a passion of mine because it emphasizes the significance of gathering around the table and fostering a sense of community. It’s about cooking together with family and imparting skills that they can pass down to their own families in the future.”

Demarco boasts 30 years of culinary experience. His expertise has led him from serving as a private chef to collaborating with renowned chefs, and even to crafting exquisite pastries in New York City.

“Today, much of the food we consume is processed, leaving us unaware of what we're actually eating. However, if you take the time to cook at home instead of frequently dining out, you'll likely feel much better,” Demarco remarked.

Reporter: "Can you share some advantages of preparing your own meals?"
Demarco: “Mastering cooking skills fosters self-sufficiency. It helps you cut down on expenses and reduces the frequency of takeout meals.”
Reporter: "Women definitely appreciate a man who knows his way around the kitchen."
Demarco: “Oh, please! That’s exactly how I won over my wife!”

In the end, we managed to make Saffron Fettuccini. It wasn't the simplest task. Nonetheless, Demarco suggests that if you want to begin cooking more often, it's best to slowly acclimate yourself to the routine.

"Embrace it as a way of life. Avoid the mindset of thinking, 'I’ll start this tomorrow,' and trying to make a drastic change all at once. Instead, approach it as a lifestyle and incorporate it slowly," Demarco advised.

And if your meal doesn’t turn out as expected, simply give it another shot.

“How much time do you need to master something in your life?” Demarco asked. He also emphasized the importance of preparation. “Consider what you want to make ahead of time.”
