Is it time to dispose of your black plastic cooking utensils? Experts offer their insights.

"When selecting cooking utensils, the rule is simple: the more natural the materials, the higher the quality." View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Getty Images If you've been active on TikTok in recent months, you've probably seen a buzzy video or two surrounding the black plastic cooking utensils controversy. A recent study suggested that black-colored plastic kitchen tools are made from recycled electronic materials that may contain harmful flame retardants. It was later revealed that researchers miscalculated their initial findings, well overstating the actual risk of toxicity. However, according to Google Trends, the search for "nontoxic cooking utensils" is still on the rise. Tsvetomira Vacheva, who serves as a brand manager for Woodenhouse Lifelong Quality, a company specializing in wooden utensils, shared with Shop TODAY that "there is a growing consumer awareness not just about healthier food options, but also about the importance of using nontoxic and natural alternatives for items that interact with food." "When it comes to cooking utensils, the principle is straightforward: the more natural, the better," continues Vacheva. Together with Vacheva and Danielle Walsh, a representative from Anyday's cookware brand, we had a discussion with Dr. Joe Zagorski, a toxicologist and assistant professor at Michigan State University's Center for Research on Ingredient Safety. He elaborated on the research outcomes and suggested safer alternative materials for cooking utensils. Are black cooking utensils harmful to health? If you've relied on black plastic cooking utensils in your kitchen for many years, there's no need to panic. Wellness As we discussed earlier, the initial research conducted by scientists regarding these possibly dangerous cooking utensils contained a mathematical mistake. This mistake inaccurately reported the safety threshold for BDE-209 (a flame retardant) exposure for an adult weighing 132 pounds, claiming it was 42,000 nanograms per day instead of the correct figure of 420,000 nanograms per day. According to the study, an exposure of about 34,700 nanograms per day was present from utensils tested, which came uncomfortably close to the limit that was originally stated. On December 15, Chemosphere issued an update acknowledging a correction that slightly tempered their findings. The update reassured readers that despite this adjustment, the main conclusion of the study remained unchanged: the recycled plastic kitchen utensils examined were confirmed to contain flame retardants. If you're worried about plastic or the risk of contamination it may pose, Zagorski recommends exploring other materials like wood or metal. He advises, “To guarantee safety and longevity, choose reputable brands that specialize in creating products meant for high-temperature settings.” "When discussing toxicity, it’s essential to consider it alongside the environmental impact of our consumer choices," adds Vacheva. "Factors such as biodegradability, the potential release of toxins during disposal, and damage to marine ecosystems should always be taken into account. We are part of a connected ecosystem, and even if the effects are not immediately visible or direct, they remain significant and impactful," she notes. When selecting cooking utensils, consider the following factors: 1. **Material**: Choose utensils made from durable materials such as stainless steel, silicone, wood, or heat-resistant plastic. Each material has its own advantages, like heat resistance or non-stick properties. 2. **Ergonomics**: Look for utensils that are comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver. Ergonomically designed handles can reduce strain during extended use. 3. **Heat Resistance**: Ensure that the utensils can withstand high temperatures, especially if you plan to use them in hot cookware. Silicone and wooden utensils are often good choices for this. 4. **Ease of Cleaning**: Opt for utensils that are dishwasher safe or easy to clean by hand. Non-stick surfaces can also make cleanup simpler. 5. **Versatility**: Consider utensils that serve multiple purposes, such as a spatula that can also be used for flipping or stirring. 6. **Size and Shape**: Choose utensils that fit well with your cookware. For example, long-handled utensils work better for deep pots, while shorter ones may be ideal for frying pans. 7. **Durability**: Invest in high-quality utensils that can withstand regular use without breaking or deforming. 8. **Safety**: Ensure that the utensils do not leach harmful chemicals, especially if they are made from plastic. Look for BPA-free options. 9. **Aesthetic Appeal**: While functionality is key, consider the design and color of the utensils to match your kitchen decor. 10. **Reviews and Recommendations**: Check reviews or ask friends and family for recommendations to find trusted brands and products. By considering these factors, you can choose the right cooking utensils that will enhance your culinary experience. With a growing number of individuals choosing to discard their black plastic cooking utensils, the positive aspect is that there are numerous alternative materials to consider, such as wood, metal, and silicone. "According to Vacheva, when choosing cooking utensils, consumers should focus on natural wood materials that have no artificial coloring. She emphasizes that because wooden utensils often have varnish applied, it's important to select those finished with food-grade varnish to minimize any possible risks." "I also can’t get enough of good old-fashioned wooden spoons — I have about 10 in my utensil holder," says Walsh. "One more thing I don’t think any kitchen should be without: A metal fish spatula. And no, it’s not just for fish — it’s unmatched for flipping eggs and pancakes," she recommends. Walsh is an enthusiastic advocate for silicone cooking utensils. She notes, “Silicone offers flexibility, withstands high heat, and is free from harmful chemical leaching into your meals. Plus, silicone tools can add a vibrant splash of color to your kitchen décor,” she shares. Commonly asked questions When selecting microwave-safe cookware, consider the following factors: 1. **Material**: Look for materials specifically labeled as microwave-safe, such as glass, ceramic, or certain plastics. Avoid metal, as it can cause sparks and fires. 2. **Labeling**: Check for a microwave-safe symbol or label on the cookware. This indicates that the item has been tested for microwave use. 3. **Temperature Resistance**: Ensure the cookware can withstand high temperatures without melting or warping. 4. **Non-toxic**: Choose cookware that is free from harmful chemicals like BPA or phthalates, which can leach into food when heated. 5. **Durability**: Opt for sturdy items that won't easily crack or break when subjected to microwave heating. 6. **Shape and Size**: Select cookware that fits comfortably in your microwave, allowing for even cooking and preventing spills. 7. **Ventilation**: Some microwave-safe lids have venting options to allow steam to escape, reducing the risk of explosion during cooking. 8. **Ease of Cleaning**: Look for cookware that is dishwasher-safe or easy to clean by hand. By considering these factors, you can ensure that your cookware is safe and effective for microwave use. "According to Walsh, microwave-safe cookware ought to be free of plastic and preferably made of glass, featuring a snug lid to contain steam and a vent for pressure release. She clarifies that the rubbery texture often linked to microwave cooking is actually caused by moisture escaping from the food, rather than the microwave's operation." A man who completed 250,000 steps in just a week has shared the effects this challenge had on his physical condition. YouTuber Jack Massey Welsh, aged 28, shared his journey on his channel, where he averaged an impressive 35,700 steps each day. It came with its fair share of difficulties, and he later disclosed that he experienced swollen ankles, sore feet, and a discolored toenail. However, Jack found himself astonished by the transformations in his belly, arms, and legs – a realization that such results could come from simply walking had never crossed his mind. He didn't alter his diet leading up to the challenge, aside from adding more protein in an effort to shed belly fat. Prior to and following the challenge, he took measurements of various body parts, including his torso and legs, to analyze the differences and similarities. On the opening day of the challenge, he remarked: "I feel exhausted, yet I'm okay. It's merely a matter of taking one step at a time." However, those words returned to trouble him on the following day when he admitted, "I was beginning to realize how overly self-assured I had been on the first day. When I boldly stated, ‘It’s simply a matter of putting one foot in front of the other, isn’t it?’ I now see that even that simple act has become quite a challenge," he confessed. "Every single step is painful and feels like a struggle."  By the fourth day, although his leg pain had diminished, he began to encounter new physical issues. He mentioned, "At this point, it seems that the only thing holding me back in this challenge is simply the joint pain in my feet." ‘Because even though I in myself have the energy to do 30,000 steps easily today, each step just hurts quite a bit and I am starting to blister up in a few places, so that’s kind of what’s slowing me down.’ By the fifth day, he required pain relief for the blisters, and by the sixth day, he noticed his ankles were swollen. In the end, it all paid off, and he remarked: "This was such an incredible sense of achievement. I took a total of 250,000 steps in just one week. For me, the experience itself made it all worthwhile." He also looked at his photos from before and after, remarking, "I appear to be slimmer than I was at the beginning, which took me by surprise. Could this indicate that I've possibly lost some muscle mass?" Jack mentioned that he has shed 2 pounds of belly fat, noting that the difference is visible in his side profile. It was additionally disclosed that the circumference of his arms and torso had decreased slightly, while his thighs had increased by 0.5cm. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Definitely not.' "My joints just couldn't handle it; even two days later, I'm still hoping the swelling around my ankles will go down." Research indicates that for individuals over 60, taking 6,000 steps daily can reduce the risk of premature death by 50%, while exceeding 8,000 steps does not provide significant additional advantages. The concept of walking 10,000 steps daily originated as a marketing strategy by a Japanese company that aimed to promote pedometers following the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Adial Pharmaceuticals: A Conversation with Cary Claiborne Regarding the Addiction Treatment Firm

Adial Pharmaceuticals: A Conversation with Cary Claiborne Regarding the Addiction Treatment Firm

Adial Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical firm in the clinical development phase, dedicated to creating therapies for addiction disorders. In an exclusive interview with Pulse 2.0, CEO and board member Cary Claiborne Sr. shared insights about the company's mission and progress. Cary Claiborne’s History View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Cary Claiborne has a diverse background that spans various fields. He has experience in both the corporate world and community service, which has shaped his perspective and approach to leadership. Claiborne mentioned that his journey has been influenced by his commitment to making a positive impact in his community and his dedication to professional excellence. "I started my professional journey at GE while pursuing an MBA from Villanova University. I progressed through various roles, beginning in GE's Financial Management Program and ultimately attaining the role of President of New Enterprise Wholesale Services. After that, I took on numerous positions in diverse sectors, including roles at Home Depot and MCI." "Having dedicated two decades to non-healthcare industries, I discovered my true passion lay in collaborating with organizations committed to creating therapies that address the unmet needs of patients. Consequently, I have held leadership roles in various biotech and biopharma firms, such as Osiris Therapeutics, Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, and Indivior. During my tenure as CFO at Indivior, I concentrated on initiatives aimed at making a difference for patients grappling with addiction. This commitment inspired my transition to Adial Pharmaceuticals, where I became a board member in 2021, assumed the role of COO later that year, and was appointed CEO in August 2022." Creation of Adial What inspired the formation of the company? Claiborne revealed: "The creators of Adial understood the pressing necessity to create effective solutions for the millions affected by alcohol use disorder, who are searching for treatments that align with their individual paths to recovery." "We dedicated ourselves to thoroughly reviewing the scientific literature and crafting a strategy grounded in the fundamental science. Our approach centers on targeting serotonin signaling to interfere with the neural pathways associated with alcohol addiction. Additionally, we assessed current trends and research in addiction treatment, particularly the impact of harm reduction in supporting individuals during their recovery journey. This exploration inspired us to pursue an innovative idea: creating a therapy for alcohol use disorder that does not rely on complete abstinence." Cherished Moment Claiborne reminisced about a particularly memorable moment during their time with the company, saying: “Reviewing the detailed analysis of the Phase 3 ONWARD trial results by each of the four Genotypes that were enrolled in the trial and learning that one of those four Genotypes (AG) significantly outperformed the others in terms of their response to AD04. Then going backwards to even our prior Phase 2 data to confirm that the AG signal wasn’t just some anomaly, and finding the same result was a great memory.  What that meant was that there was a clear path forward in future trials if we focused initially on that genotype. The key is developing a plan after you’ve gotten trial results, seeing where the successes are, and then formulating a strategy to move to the next stage. That moment became the foundation for where we are going as a company now.” Essential Offerings What are the main products and features of the company? Claiborne elaborated: “Our primary asset is AD04, a genetically targeted antagonist of the serotonin-3 receptor designed to treat Alcohol Use Disorder. This innovative mechanism sets it apart from current treatment options for Alcohol Use Disorder, and we believe it could work synergistically with existing therapies. We have pinpointed particular genetic groups that are likely to benefit the most from this treatment and are currently working on a companion diagnostic test to help identify these patients.” Obstacles Encountered What obstacles has Claiborne and the team encountered while establishing the company? Claiborne admitted: “Recent economic changes following the peak in biotech funding a few years ago, and subsequent downturn in the years after have posed significant challenges for the industry as a whole.  Investors tend to be cautious to deploy capital in uncertain economic times, and biotech companies are inherently risky due to the lengthy and costly process of bringing a new therapy to market. To overcome this challenge, we have had to be innovative in our approach to fundraising. We also took this opportunity to focus on demonstrating the robustness of our scientific data and recently published several peer-reviewed studies highlighting the safety and utility of our approach.” "The stigma associated with addiction continues to pose a major obstacle. Many people misinterpret addiction as a personal shortcoming instead of recognizing it as a multifaceted medical issue that necessitates professional care. In response to this challenge, we have emphasized the importance of education and advocacy within our overall approach." The Progression of Adial's Technology How has the company’s technology progressed since its inception? Claiborne mentioned: “As we’ve gained a more comprehensive understanding of the complex nature of addiction, we’ve managed to narrow our focus down to specific genotypes that respond more positively to our therapy.  Not everyone responds the same way to certain medications, so we have really focused on pinpointing  a subset of patients with alcohol use disorder in whom AD04 is predicted to elicit a particularly robust response and are now using a genetic diagnostic assay to detect these individuals on a genetic basis.” Notable Achievements What are some of the most notable milestones achieved by the company? Claiborne mentioned: “Drawing from the solid data obtained in our Phase 2b and 3 clinical trials, we successfully conducted a fruitful meeting with the FDA. In this discussion, we were pleased to receive positive feedback regarding our current data as well as our strategic plans for the future. The insights provided by the FDA were instrumental in shaping a thorough regulatory strategy for our next actions. These conversations marked an important milestone for our organization, offering not just a clear direction ahead, but also a vital synchronization of our company’s goals and priorities. This alignment will empower us to maneuver through the regulatory environment with greater efficiency and propel AD04 forward with assurance.” Standing Out From The Competition What sets the company apart from its competitors? Claiborne stated: “What sets us apart from others in the Alcohol Use Disorder treatment space is the use of personalized medicine and our non-abstinence-based approach. By using precision medicine to identify the patients most likely to benefit from our therapy, we believe we are placing ourselves on the razor’s edge of scientific advancements in modern medicine.  Addiction is a complicated disorder with lots of different causal factors, and everyone’s path to recovery is different. By focusing on a specific population of patients and giving them a pharmacological therapy that offers a flexible path to recovery, we believe we are really doing something groundbreaking compared to what has long been the status quo.” "Our choice to adopt a non-abstinence-based approach to addiction treatment is founded on the principle of harm reduction, which is supported by extensive research in the field. In contrast to conventional methods that require total abstinence, our strategy recognizes the intricate nature of addiction and the diverse journeys toward recovery. By concentrating on minimizing harmful behaviors and enhancing overall well-being, we provide a more empathetic and pragmatic option for individuals who find the strictness of abstinence-only programs challenging. This approach is especially advantageous for patients who may not be prepared or able to fully abstain but are eager to decrease their substance use and mitigate its adverse effects." Aspirations for Our Company’s Future What are some of the company's future objectives? Claiborne summarized: “Our immediate objective is to launch our scheduled Phase 3 clinical trial for AD04. Achieving this milestone is vital, as it will enable us to gather the essential data needed to prove the safety and effectiveness of AD04 in addressing alcohol use disorder.” "Our primary goal is to deliver an effective therapy to individuals who need it the most, providing hope for those battling alcohol use disorder. While we are making progress in developing AD04, we are also establishing a foundation for its ability to revolutionize addiction treatment."

Unlocking the Secrets to Flavoring Rice in Your Rice Cooker

Unlocking the Secrets to Flavoring Rice in Your Rice Cooker

View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Lesterman/Shutterstock.com Cooking rice on the stove can be effective, but let's face it: using a rice cooker makes everything simpler. By removing the constant need to stir and the worry of burning the bottom, the whole process becomes much more pleasant and stress-free. All it takes is adding rice and water to the cooker, pressing a button, and fluffing the rice when it's finished—it's really that easy. This handy kitchen device also simplifies the task of adding flavor to your food. Just remember to put your seasonings in the rice cooker at the beginning of the cooking process, allowing the grains plenty of time to absorb all those delicious flavors. Whether you use broth, butter, dried herbs, or olive oil, you'll notice a major difference when you incorporate them before the food has been cooked as opposed to after. Even Gordon Ramsay agrees and abides by this rule when seasoning rice; if you wait until it's fully cooked, your flavors won't blend completely into the grains, which will make for an unimpressive result. Whatever you decide to season it with — even if it's just a bit of salt and pepper — simply add it before you begin the rice cycle, and cook the rice as usual. Top Methods for Pre-Seasoning Your Rice View pictures in App save up to 80% data. Nata_vkusidey/ Getty Images The type of rice you select will also affect the outcome. It's better to choose a long-grain variety, like jasmine or basmati. They're less likely to get soggy after seasonings are added to them. You could also use brown rice, but be aware that it cooks slower than white rice because of its bran layer, which means it takes longer to absorb water. Considering the right seasonings to enhance your dish is crucial. One easy method to infuse flavor into white rice is by placing a bay leaf in the rice cooker. While the taste is mild, it enriches the overall flavor profile. Additionally, incorporating whole cardamom pods can further elevate the taste of your rice. If cardamom and bay leaves are too subtle for your liking, feel free to get a little adventurous with the seasoning. Before you begin the rice cycle, try throwing in some garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and parsley, making sure it all gets well-incorporated in the water-rice mixture. We also like using chopped up, fresh herbs, like rosemary, dill, and basil. If you want to really give your rice a flavor boost, use a chicken or vegetable broth instead of water. This is the easiest way to add extra flavor to your rice even when you're short on fresh herbs.

Rod Stewart has been given a frightening diagnosis of cancer. Rod Stewart has shared a chilling account of a health scare that left him feeling "fearful" and "vulnerable." In his 2012 memoir, Rod: The Autobiography, the Maggie May crooner detailed how a routine check-up at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles took a terrifying turn. Despite feeling as "fit as a butcher's dog," Rod was called into the doctor's office after tests revealed an anomaly on his thyroid gland. Rod penned: "The following day, I went back to the hospital and underwent a biopsy. Under a local anesthetic, part of the affected area was removed using a needle and taken away for analysis." A phone call the next day delivered the chilling news: "The results of the tests indicated that the 'something' on my thyroid gland was a malignant growth: cancer." Rod admitted that hearing this kind of news can be quite unsettling, revealing that he felt more "fearful" and "vulnerable" than ever in his life. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. He expressed a sense of being exposed and defenseless. Just two days later, he was back in the hospital for surgery, checking in under the pseudonym "Billy Potts" - a nod to his dogs' names - to dodge the media. He disclosed that the four-hour operation brought the surgeon's knife perilously close to his vocal cords, meaning "any slip" could have ended his singing career, reports the Daily Record. The procedure went well, and the legendary vocalist avoided chemotherapy, ensuring that his trademark hairstyle remained intact. Displaying his usual sense of humor, he quipped that going bald would pose a career-threatening dilemma "second only" to the loss of his singing ability. In a 2021 episode of the UK talk show Loose Women, Rod revealed that he had faced issues with voice loss. He acknowledged that the carefree days of partying all night, drinking, and living wildly without consequences for his voice are behind him, and that he now needs to take measures to "protect" it. Looking back on his health scare, he remarked: "I experienced a brief episode of thyroid cancer, but it was resolved in just 10 minutes. I don't want to give the impression that I battled cancer for an extended period. It was quite straightforward to eliminate, though I did completely lose my voice."
